Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rising dramatically above the corner of Park and Adams Avenue, the S.S. Kresge Building towers over a bustling early Detroit streetscape — horse-drawn vehicles and early automobiles sharing the road beneath awnings and gas lamps in this vivid hand-colored linen-era card. Built as the headquarters of the five-and-dime retail empire that would eventually spawn Kmart, this skyscraper was considered one of Detroit's most modern when the card was printed, and the reverse says so plainly. What makes this card irresistible to collectors is the intimate handwritten note on the back: a mother dashing off a quick word to her daughter Irene — "This is the place for large buildings, will see you soon, having a lovely trip, Mother" — a small, warm fragment of a family journey preserved in ink for over a century.
