Postcard 1905 Jacobs Ladder Mt Washington Cog Railway NH Accordion Leporello

Mount Washington, New Hampshire, USA1907Pre-linenGood

Steam billowing from a tiny locomotive, a wooden passenger car tilted at a heart-stopping angle, and a spindly trestle reaching over bare granite — this vivid colorized view of "Jacob's Ladder" on the Mount Washington Cog Railway is one of the most dramatic images in American railroad postcard history, and this copy anchors a complete leporello accordion booklet of White Mountains scenes. The Cog Railway, opened in 1869, was the world's first mountain-climbing cog railroad, and the Jacob's Ladder trestle — a 37.41% grade — was its most photographed moment. The accordion pull-out reveals additional panels including a black-and-white "Speed Trial to Mt. Washington" automobile racing shot and a "Presidential Range" vista, making this a multi-image snapshot of Edwardian adventure tourism in New Hampshire. Someone — perhaps a visitor named Grace or Walter — would have carried this home as proof of having conquered New England's highest peak by steam.
