Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bare autumn trees frame the imposing Greek Revival façade of Rayen High School in Youngstown, Ohio — its white Ionic columns and bold pedimented entrance lending gravitas to what was, at the time of this mailing, one of the oldest continuously operating public high schools in the state, founded in 1866 through a bequest from Judge William Rayen. The black-and-white photographic image, crisp and finely detailed, captures the school's 1880s-era building before subsequent expansions changed its profile. The card was sent from Youngstown in September of approximately 1910 by "Sister Benedict" to Miss Nellie at the home of Mr. George Chandler on Euclid Heights Overlook Road in Cleveland, Ohio. Sister Benedict's message is warm and slightly mysterious: she thanks Nellie for her "postal," notes there is "no sign of my going up yet" but promises to write "when I get a glimpse of it" — likely a reference to a promotion or transfer within a religious community — and closes with "Best love to yourself and Mr. C."
