Postcard 1928 Schonbrunn Palace Garden Neptune Grotto Gloriette Vienna Austria

Vienna, Austria1928Pre-linenExcellent

From the formal parterre at the foot of the hill, the eye travels up a broad grassy slope past the Neptune Fountain's rearing sea-horses and triton figures to the airy Gloriette colonnade crowning the ridge — an axial composition so perfectly balanced it seems almost theatrical, captured here in a silvery sepia photograph taken for the 1928 Ledermann edition of Schönbrunn Palace's gardens in Vienna. The Gloriette, built in 1775 for Emperor Joseph II as a monument to Austrian military glory, and the Neptune Grotto fountain below it, commissioned by Maria Theresa in 1780, together anchor one of the grandest Baroque garden vistas in Europe. This unused card, published by J. Plan of Vienna and photographed by P. Ledermann, is a fine example of the high-quality Austrian real-photo postcard tradition of the interwar period — pristine and never mailed, with bold caption script reading Schlossgarten Schönbrunn mit Neptungrotte u. Gloriette, Wien XIII/1.
