Postcard 1920s RPPC California Memorial Stadium UC Berkeley Aerial View

Berkeley, California, USA1925RPPCGood

Nestled into the hills above Berkeley, California Memorial Stadium emerges from the landscape in this sweeping aerial real-photo postcard — the horseshoe bowl carved dramatically into the Strawberry Canyon hillside, the Campanile tower piercing the treeline in the distance. Opened in 1923 as a World War I memorial, the stadium was an engineering marvel of its era, tucked between earthquake-prone hills yet built to seat over 73,000 fans. This early RPPC captures the venue in its first decade, before the Hayward Fault running directly beneath the south end zone became a public concern. The campus and city of Berkeley spread westward in the haze beyond, offering a remarkable document of the UC campus as it looked in the mid-1920s. Publisher code S703 identifies Pacific Novelty Co. of San Francisco and Los Angeles, a prolific regional postcard house active from the 1910s through the 1940s.
