Postcard c1910 Southampton England Pull-Out Train Cover Jay Em Jay Novelty Series

Southampton, England, UK1910Pre-linenGood

A gleaming Great Western Railway locomotive thunders out of a tunnel in full chromolithographic color on this "Mailing Novelty" pull-out postcard published by Jackson & Son (Gy.) Ltd. of Teddington-on-Thames under their "Jay Em Jay / Gy. Series" imprint — lift the hinged train-front flap and an accordion strip of photographic views of Southampton cascades out, including Netley Abbey in evocative ruin, the Royal Pier, and additional harbor and town scenes. The cover caption playfully reads "We have just arrived at Southampton — The Views are lovely," perfectly marrying the railway travel experience to the novelty postcard format that was at its commercial peak in Edwardian Britain. The back, catalogued No. 631 and printed in England, carries the publisher's postage note distinguishing between letter postage (for written messages) and the reduced rate for five words of greeting, reflecting the nuanced British postal regulations of the era. Never mailed, the card is in Good condition with minor toning; the accordion interior strip is complete, showing Netley Abbey and Royal Pier among identifiable subjects.
