Antique & Vintage Postcards

A ruddy-cheeked, magnificently mustachioed British postman in full dark-green uniform grins as he proffers a letter — his enormous brown leather mailbag dominating the foreground bears the invitation: "Within this postman's bag you'll find / An interesting gift consigned." Lift the die-cut flap of the real leather bag affixed to the card and a concertina strip of miniature London views tumbles out, published by the celebrated Valentine & Sons, Ltd. of Dundee and London. These novelties were beloved keepsakes of the Edwardian era, when the postman himself was a figure of romance and connection; one can imagine a young woman named Edith receiving this from a friend newly arrived in the capital, the tiny views of Tower Bridge and the Thames a substitute for the journey itself.
