Cheeky, briny, and unmistakably British — this novelty souvenir card from Southampton leads with a boldly printed bloater (a whole salt-cured herring) rendered in full chromolithographic glory against a crimson banner reading "A Well Stuffed Bloater from Southampton," while the verse below promises "Take this Bloater from the sea, And a Wish to you from me." Pull back the fish's belly and out tumbles a miniature accordion strip of Southampton landmarks: the Royal Pier, the Floating Bridge showing Windsor (sic) Southampton waterfront, and several civic views including what appears to be a memorial and public gardens. These "stuffed" novelty cards — where tiny photos hide inside a comical outer image — were enormously popular Edwardian seaside keepsakes, and Southampton's port setting made the bloater joke doubly apt for a city that watched ocean liners come and go.
