Postcard 1930s Bonjour de Charleroi Belgium Bus Novelty Pull-Out Leporello

Charleroi, Belgium1932Pre-linenGood

A gleaming white motor coach bursting with colorfully dressed passengers rolls through a sunny Belgian countryside, two figures waving gaily from the roadside — this is the irresistible cover of a "Bonjour de Charleroi" novelty pull-out postcard from interwar Belgium, where the art of the souvenir leporello reached its cheerful peak. Hidden behind a flap in the bus's side emerges a crisp accordion strip of Charleroi city views: a busy market square, the imposing Hôtel de Ville with its clock tower and war memorial, a neoclassical public building, a dramatic sculptural monument, and a park pavilion. Charleroi, the industrial heart of Wallonia, reinvented itself as a proud civic destination between the wars, and cards like this one — perhaps sent home by a visitor named Émile or Hélène — captured that civic pride in miniature. The bus illustration itself is a fine period document of 1930s European coach design.
