Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two women of the Konavle valley stand in rich conversation, their elaborate folk costumes a riot of gold braid, crimson trim, and intricate embroidery against dark wool — the traditional "Konavoska narodna nošnja" of the region just south of Dubrovnik, here rendered in vivid chromolithographic colour that still leaps from the card more than a century later. Published by Braća Ferranti of Dubrovnik under its three-language imprint — "Dopisnica / Cartolina di Corrispondenza / Korrespondenz-Karte" in Croatian, Italian, and German respectively — this card reflects the layered sovereignty of Ragusa (the Habsburg name for Dubrovnik) in the final decade before World War I dissolved the empire. The white headdresses (povoje), gold-edged aprons, and the distinctive woven shoulder bags (torbe) with their flame-coloured tassels are ethnographically accurate and match museum documentation of Konavoska dress. Braća (Brothers) Ferranti was one of the leading Dalmatian postcard publishers of the era, and their Dubrovnik folk-costume series is now among the most sought-after Adriatic deltiology subjects. Unused, the card retains exceptional colour saturation — the chromolithography shows no fading, making this a particularly fine example.
