Antique & Vintage Postcards

Equal parts whimsy and mystery, this 1907 novelty card presents a pudgy toddler in a silvery-blue romper suit, photographed from behind as he toddles across a richly patterned red carpet — his bald head and bowed legs the only clue to his identity. The caption reads "Meet Me Face To Face — Zophar," a deadpan joke that would have tickled Edwardian funny bones: you can't see Zophar's face at all. Published by The Simplicity Co. of Chicago and postmarked Des Moines, Iowa, July 28, 1907, the card was dashed off by "Ellen" to her "dear cousin Francis," thanking her for postal cards and wishing her a "dandy time at the picnic" — a vivid snapshot of a sunny summer afternoon more than a century ago.
