Postcard 1902 RPPC African Elephant London Zoo ZSL Regent's Park F.W. Bond

London, England, United Kingdom1902Pre-linenExcellent

A keeper rests his hand on the trunk of a massive African elephant in the outdoor yard of the Zoological Society of London's Regent's Park gardens — a rare and early real-photo postcard by staff photographer F. W. Bond, issued as card No. 6 in the ZSL's own official series circa 1902–1904. The elephant's wrinkled hide fills the frame against the old brick elephant house, and the keeper — cap, uniform, and ankus in hand — offers a compelling sense of the Victorian-Edwardian keeper-animal relationship at what is now the world's oldest scientific zoo, founded in 1828. The undivided back with its simple "1d STAMP / THE ADDRESS ONLY TO BE WRITTEN HERE" format dates this card firmly to the pre-divided-back era (before 1902 UK regulation, or the very earliest divided-back transitional period), making it one of the earlier ZSL photographic postcards known to collectors.
