Rays of dawn light burst through storm-laden clouds above a glassy, horizon-wide sea in this luminous real-photograph postcard titled simply "A Sunrise" — number 235 in the celebrated Judges' Ltd. photographic series, produced by the Hastings-based firm that became Britain's premier publisher of actual-photograph postcards in the Edwardian and interwar periods. The brooding chiaroscuro of cloud and reflected light gives the image a near-painterly quality, and a close-up detail image reveals the extraordinary tonal depth achieved in Judges' silver-gelatin printing process.
