Postcard 1910s Washington University Newton Wilson Hall St Louis MO Hand-Colored

St. Louis, Missouri, USA1915Pre-linenExcellent

A glowing hand-colored view captures the rear façade of Newton R. Wilson Memorial Hall rising confidently from a manicured campus lawn — its warm brick Collegiate Gothic stonework, arched windows, and buttressed corners speaking to the ambitions of early-twentieth-century American university architecture. Built to house the Geology and Geography departments at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, this hall was named for Newton R. Wilson, a benefactor whose gift helped shape the sciences on the Hilltop Campus. The Albertype Company of Brooklyn, a prolific publisher of quality photographic postcards, produced this hand-colored gem, sold through the Washington University Bookstore. A bare-limbed tree stands sentinel at center, suggesting early spring, while a fire hydrant peeks from the foreground path — a quietly human detail in an otherwise grand composition. Never mailed, the card retains its original crispness and vivid applied color.
