French Dinner Menu Reproduction (Escoffier Museum

Marseille, France1893Pre-linenGood

Dated "Le 7 Juin 1893," this exquisite chromolithographed menu card from the Grand Hôtel Noailles in Marseille transports you to a gilded Belle Époque banquet: couples in 18th-century masquerade costume dance a minuet across the lower left, their pink ruffles and teal justaucorps rendered in lush chromolithography, while a formal nine-course dinner unfolds in elegant script beside them — Potage Sévigné, Turbot Sauce Mousseline, Filet de Bœuf à la Montmorency, roasted guinea fowl on the spit, Russian salad, and a closing flourish of Moët & Chandon Frappé. The Grand Hôtel Noailles, located on the Canebière, was Marseille's most prestigious address and hosted dignitaries throughout the Third Republic era. A purple embossed circular stamp in the upper left — "Polydor S. Façon Père — Marseille — No. 90" — identifies the printer/stationer. This is a rare surviving piece of 19th-century French hotel ephemera, cherished by menu collectors, Francophiles, and historians of gastronomy.
