Postcard 1921 Karlstad Sweden Bridge View Embossed Gold Sent Per to Marbacken

Karlstad, Värmland, Sweden1921Pre-linenGood

Sent from Karlstad in the heart of Sweden's Värmland region on a crisp autumn day in 1921, this embossed gold-lattice-bordered photographic postcard shows the graceful multi-arched stone bridge spanning the Klarälven River — a landmark so central to Karlstad's identity that the city was nicknamed "the city of the sun" but is equally associated with its elegant river crossings. The card was mailed to a recipient named Per at Orrkärnhöjden in Märbacken — a hamlet in Värmland that shares its county with the Nobel Prize–winning author Selma Lagerlöf, whose estate Mårbacka lends the district its literary fame. The handwritten Swedish message, dated Karlstad February 1921, speaks warmly about the city ("Ett nu har i Karlstad…") and references the beauty of the surroundings. The embossed gold craquelure border with fine dot detailing is in excellent condition, the photographic center image is sharp and well-contrasted, and the card was mailed with a Swedish stamp (now largely removed, leaving only a partial crescent postmark). Catalogued as No. 428, this is a lovely example of Swedish Jugendstil-influenced postcard design married to vernacular correspondence.
