Postcard 1930 Cherbourg France Pull-Out Balloon Nacelle Novelty Mailed Brooklyn NY

Cherbourg, Manche, Normandy, France1930Pre-linenGood

A whimsical hot-air balloon basket packed with cartoon sailors and a startled cat soars over an aerial view of Cherbourg's famous harbor in this brilliantly chromolithographed French novelty pull-out postcard — the cover caption urges the recipient: "Voulez-vous connaître Cherbourg? Soulevez la nacelle" ("Want to know Cherbourg? Lift the gondola"), and lifting the die-cut basket flap releases an accordion strip of real photographic views of the Norman port city, including the Bassin de Plaisance, a dramatic equestrian statue, harbor panoramas, a mountain landscape, and the Musée de Beaux-Arts. Published by G. Artaud of Nantes (Avenue de la Close), this card was actually mailed — postmarked Cherbourg, Manche on 23 VI 30 (June 23, 1930) — and sent by a traveler named Joey to "Riche and Anne" at 1692 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, USA. Joey's message is irresistible: "Dear Riche + Anne, I am now in France and I wish you was both here to help me drink this stuff I got on the table. Write soon, Joey." The accordion strip is fully intact and legible, the chromolithography retains vivid color, and the postmark is clear. Catalogued No. 605.
