Postcard 1905 Cliff Drive Santa Cruz California Britton & Rey Litho UDB

Santa Cruz, California, USA1905Pre-linenExcellent

From a sweeping bird's-eye vantage point — likely taken from the cliffs above what is now Natural Bridges State Beach — this luminous 1905 color lithograph sweeps the eye along the sinuous curve of Cliff Drive as it winds above the churning Pacific surf, the pale limestone headlands dissolving into a hazy blue horizon dotted with offshore rocks. The winding road, still a beloved Santa Cruz landmark today, was a fashionable carriage drive at the turn of the century, and the scene's lush green coastal scrub and dramatic sea-stack geology made it one of the most-photographed stretches of the California coast. Britton & Rey of San Francisco, the publisher, was one of the oldest and most respected lithographic firms on the West Coast, established in Gold Rush–era San Francisco and responsible for some of the finest early California chromolithograph postcards and maps. Card no. 578 in their California series, this undivided-back example — "This Side Is For the Address" with one-cent domestic postage notation — pre-dates March 1907 and represents the earliest and most collectible era of American scenic postcards. The rich color palette, precise detail in the cliff geology, and the gentle S-curve of the road give this card genuine artistic merit beyond its documentary value.
