A grandmother named Gran sends her love across the miles — this vivid linen-era postcard of Butchart's Gardens and Residence in Victoria, British Columbia, captures the famous estate in its full horticultural glory: a long lily-pad pond mirrors the sky while climbing roses in coral and orange frame the walk, and the ivy-draped manor stretches across a backdrop of mature Douglas firs. Butchart's Gardens, begun around 1904 by Jennie Butchart to reclaim a depleted limestone quarry, had by the 1930s become one of North America's premier show gardens, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors annually. The handwritten message on the reverse reads warmly, "From Gran with much love to dear Lillie Katherine," a tender cross-generational note that gives this mass-produced souvenir an irreplaceable personal dimension.
