Antique & Vintage Postcards

Golden light bathes the ornate Churrigueresque facade and soaring bell tower of the former Jesuit seminary at Tepotzotlán, Mexico, in this richly painted artistic postcard dated 1933 in the lower right corner — a warm, impressionistic rendering that captures the drama of one of New Spain's greatest baroque monuments. The church of San Francisco Javier, begun in the 17th century and completed by 1762, was by the 1930s serving as the Museo Nacional del Virreinato, and its sculptural stone facade drew artists and tourists alike. Sent from Mexico City to a Mrs. S. Lewing of Lafayette, California, the handwritten message speaks of a busy trip: "We had a fine journey, please enjoy…" The Mexican stamp commemorates the 1934 centenary of a historic event, adding philatelic color to an already visually distinguished card published by Félix Martín of Mexico City.
