Brienz Rothorn Bahn Steam Railway Swiss Alps Edelweiss Postcard c1910
Brienz, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland1910Pre-linenGood
Black-and-white photographic postcard of the Brienz Rothorn Bahn (BRB) rack railway, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. The dramatic vertical composition looks down the steep hillside track as a two-car steam train climbs toward the summit, with the full panorama of the Bernese Alps spread behind it. In the foreground, a clump of edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale) blooms prominently among alpine rocks — a compositional flourish typical of Swiss tourist photography of the period. Six Alpine peaks are identified by name and elevation in printed text across the top: Rosenhorn 3691m, Mittelhorn 3708m, Wetterhorn 3703m, Schreckhorn 4080m, Finsteraarhorn 4215m, Fiescherhörner 4049m. Caption printed lower left: 'Brienz – Rothorn-Bahn mit Hochalpen.' Published and distributed by Selfridge & Co., Ltd., London — W & K Series. The Brienz Rothorn Bahn opened in 1892 and remains one of the few Swiss steam rack railways still in operation. Unused and unposted.
