House of Commons Chamber London Parliament Interior Postcard c1910

London, England, United Kingdom1910Pre-linenGood
Black-and-white photographic postcard of the interior of the House of Commons chamber, Palace of Westminster, London. The view is taken from the public gallery looking toward the Speaker's Chair at the far end, showing the full length of the chamber: the green leather benches of the Government and Opposition arranged facing each other in two long parallel rows, the central Table of the House with the despatch boxes, the ornate carved wooden Speaker's Chair, the press gallery above, and the elaborately decorated hammer-beam ceiling with carved panels and Gothic arched windows on all sides admitting natural light. This is the original Barry-Pugin chamber completed in 1852, which was destroyed by German incendiary bombing on the night of 10–11 May 1941 during the London Blitz. The current chamber, rebuilt to Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's design, opened in 1950. This postcard therefore documents the lost interior. Caption printed lower centre: 'THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.' Series number 'No 27' at lower right; 'SELFRIDGE, LONDON' at lower left. Published by Selfridge & Co., Ltd., London — W & K Series. Identical back format to companion card PC-00221 (Brienz Rothorn Bahn). Unused and unposted.
