Postcard 1901 Tower of London Yeoman Gaoler State Dress Axe Pre-Linen

London, United Kingdom1903Pre-linenExcellent

Standing at stiff attention in the full Tudor splendor of his State Dress, a Yeoman Gaoler of the Tower of London grips his ceremonial axe-topped partisan while campaign medals glint on his embroidered chest — a living relic of the fortress that has held kings, queens, and traitors since the reign of William the Conqueror. The crisp black-and-white real-photo postcard captures every detail of the iconic uniform: the black velvet bonnet trimmed with bay leaves, the white ruff collar, gold-striped doublet bearing the royal cipher "R" (for Rex, confirming a reign of a king — Edward VII, r. 1901–1910), and buckled shoes. The reverse identifies the subject precisely: Tower of London — Yeoman Gaoler in State Dress with Axe. The undivided back format and single-space address layout place this firmly in the pre-1907 era. A wonderful occupational and royal-history card with strong collector crossover appeal among both royalty and militaria enthusiasts.
