Postcard 1920s RPPC Roma Pyramid of Caio Cestio Porta San Paolo Rome Italy Richter

Rome, Italy1928RPPCGood

The ancient Pyramid of Gaius Cestius rises with startling abruptness from the Roman streetscape in this sharp real-photo postcard by E. Richter of Rome — vintage automobiles from the late 1920s cluster at its base like toys beside a pharaoh's tomb, making this image a compelling double document of ancient and modern Italy. Built between 18 and 12 BC as the mausoleum of a Roman praetor, the 36-meter marble-clad pyramid stands abutting the Aurelian Walls at the Porta San Paolo, and Richter's lens captures both structures in striking perspective. The card is unused, back pristine with standard international postcard formatting — no message, no stamp — suggesting it was purchased as a souvenir and kept. E. Richter was among Rome's most prolific and technically accomplished postcard photographers of the early 20th century.
