Antique & Vintage Postcards

Hair swirling upward in the crystal-clear spring water, a smiling aquamaid in a vivid red swimsuit cradles a bouquet of red and yellow flowers while a school of dark fish swirls around her — all filmed through the glass walls of Aquarena Springs' famous submarine theatre, billed on this card as the "world's only" such attraction. Located on the headwaters of the San Marcos River in San Marcos, Texas, Aquarena Springs was one of the Lone Star State's most beloved mid-century roadside attractions, drawing families from across the Southwest to watch trained performers breathe through air hoses and mime underwater theatrics alongside the abundant fish of the Edwards Aquifer springs. The attraction operated from 1950 until 1994, when it was purchased by Texas State University and converted into a nature center; these chrome-era souvenir cards are now treasured documents of a vanished Americana spectacle. Card no. 6969, published by Dexter Press (indicated by the "K" logo, actually Koppel Color) for Aquarena, San Marcos, Texas.
