Postcard Public Library Lawrence Massachusetts c1905 Excelsior Undivided

Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA1905Pre-linenGood

Lawrence, Massachusetts' grand Romanesque Revival public library anchors this early-era black-and-white photolithograph card — its rusticated granite façade, conical corner turrets, and sweeping arched entrance portico speaking to the civic ambition of this New England mill city at the turn of the twentieth century. The building, designed in the Richardson Romanesque style then fashionable for institutional architecture, dominates the streetscape alongside a brick annex and neighboring Victorian residences. Published by The American News Company of New York under the Excelsior imprint — with printing by the Leipzig-Dresden-Berlin network — this undivided-back card predates the 1907 postal regulation that allowed messages on the address side, firmly placing it in the Pioneer/Undivided era. The stamp box specifies one-cent domestic postage (U.S., Island Possessions, Cuba, Canada, Mexico) and two cents for all other countries. Card number A 174 in the Excelsior series. Dealer pencil "100/21" on back suggests a lot purchase.
