Antique & Vintage Postcards

A hand-tinted linen-era road winds through a dramatic Berkshire gorge on this evocative Mohawk Trail souvenir — wooden guardrails hug both shoulders of the unpaved highway as a solitary early automobile disappears around the bend, framed by towering pines and a rounded blue-green summit glowing under a peachy sunset sky. The Mohawk Trail (Route 2) was America's first designated scenic auto road, opened in 1914, and quickly became a celebrated tourist route drawing motorists from across New England; this view from the western approach captures exactly the wild, rugged atmosphere that made the trail famous. Published by Chas. W. Hughes of Mechanicville, NY, the card was never mailed, retaining crisp color and clean borders typical of "Star Quality" stock.
