Postcard 1924 Abbazia Villa Istria Palmen Südstrand Austria Italy RPPC Used

Abbazia (Opatija), Croatia (then Italy, formerly Austria-Hungary)1924Pre-linenGood

Fan palms sway over the elegant promenade of Abbazia — today's Opatija, Croatia — in this evocative early photographic postcard that captures the Austro-Hungarian Riviera at its glamorous twilight: a grand Belle Époque villa rises behind tropical fronds, a horse-drawn carriage waits in the dappled shade, and a solitary figure in a broad-brimmed hat reads quietly on a bench, suspended in Mediterranean leisure. Abbazia was the Habsburg Empire's premier seaside resort, patronized by Emperor Franz Joseph I and the European aristocracy, and by 1924 — when this card was mailed — it had passed to Italy after WWI, its postage now Italian rather than Austrian. The publisher imprint reads "Seebad Quitta, K.k. Tabaktrafik Th. Kraut Abbazia, Nr. 22 — 1914," meaning the image dates to 1914 but the card was posted a decade later, bridging two empires. It was sent to Herr und Frau Karl W. in Kamersdorf near Stockerau, Austria, with a handwritten German message.
