Antique & Vintage Postcards

Shot from the deck of a vessel approaching the Molo Audace, this atmospheric real-photo-style card captures the bustling free port (Punto Franco) of Trieste in the immediate aftermath of World War I — a moment of extraordinary historical tension, as Trieste had just been ceded from Austria-Hungary to Italy in November 1918 and was still finding its identity as an Italian city. Silhouetted figures lean over railings in the foreground while a forest of steamship funnels and masts fills the middle distance, the city and its characteristic karst hillside rising behind. Published by E. Covi of Trieste and bearing a press-review visa stamp dated 13 April 1919 — just months after the armistice — this card is a primary document of a port city at a hinge-point of European history. The sepia photographic print on postcard stock, marked "Stampato in Italia," gives it the intimacy of a press photograph. Unused and uncirculated, the reverse shows only the censor/review imprint and publisher credit.
