Postcard 1926 Venice Italy Riva degli Schiavoni Moonlight View Venezia

Venice, Italy1926Pre-linenFair-Good

Under a luminous full moon suspended in dramatically churning clouds, the legendary waterfront promenade of the Riva degli Schiavoni stretches along Venice's St. Mark's Basin — the silhouette of Santa Maria della Salute dome rising dreamily at left while the equestrian monument of Vittorio Emanuele II anchors the midground, gas-lit figures strolling the broad quay in the blue-velvet stillness of an August night in 1926. This evocative moonlight-effect printed postcard — a style enormously fashionable in the 1910s–1920s — transforms a workaday tourist view into something almost operatic, its deep blue-black tones and silver highlights perfectly suited to a romantic nocturne. On 18 August 1926, the card was postmarked at Venezia Ferrovia (Venice railway station post office) and sent by someone identified only as Annum (first name reading uncertain) to the Familie Ramer at Kürzimdlag, Austria-Styria — a glimpse of the brisk tourist correspondence that flowed across the Alps during the interwar years. The message, written vertically in German cursive, fills the left margin. Publisher catalogue number 53313 1243 a is printed at lower left.
