Postcard 1905 Chicago IL View from Lake Park Pull-Out Leporello No 28111

Chicago, Illinois, USA1905Pre-linenFair-Good

Standing at the edge of Lake Park in 1905, the camera captured one of the most dramatic skylines in American urban history: the Stratford (later Straus) Building looms at left, its massive bulk typical of Chicago's pioneering steel-frame commercial architecture, while the broad esplanade of Michigan Avenue stretches toward the Art Institute's neoclassical colonnade at right. This novelty pull-out souvenir — sealed by the same patented brass clasp closure (U.S. Pat. No. 806,631, Dec. 5, 1905) seen on companion sets of the era — unfolds to reveal a concertina strip of additional Chicago scenes including Lake Drive and General Grant's Monument. The monochrome photogravure cover image is sharp and atmospheric, with horse-drawn vehicles and early pedestrians giving authentic scale to the canyon of masonry. Chicago lakefront material from this precise transitional moment — before the 1909 Burnham Plan reshaped the shoreline — commands strong collector interest, and intact leporello pull-outs in any condition are harder to find than standard flat cards.
