Postcard 1903 Paris Place du Chatelet Pont au Change Real Photo Anna

Paris, France1903Pre-linenGood

On 6 May 1903, Anna — writing from her Paris address at Faubourg Poissonnière 98 — sent this stunning real-photo street view of the Place du Châtelet and Pont au Change to her friend Jenny in Berlin, and the result is one of the finest surviving snapshot-postcards of Belle Époque Paris: a parasol-shielding woman and her companion cross the sun-drenched bridge while horse-drawn omnibuses rumble in the background, the Tour Saint-Jacques and Théâtre du Châtelet framing the grand urban stage behind them. The image is arrestingly sharp — the billowing white parasol almost gleams — and the message written across the lower image in period German cursive is deeply personal: Anna mentions she hopes Jenny will visit her in Paris and that she looks forward to sending her beautiful photos from the city. The reverse, addressed formally to Mademoiselle Jenny Beermann, Infanteriestrasse 48, Berlin, Allemagne, carries a 10-centime French Mouchon stamp (Scott #125, 1900 issue) cancelled at Paris Rue de Provence on 7 May 1903, with a Berlin delivery cancel Bestellt vom Postamte 5 — 8.5.03. A remarkably complete social document from the golden age of the picture postcard.
