Postcard 1900 Paris Rue Royale Perspective Horse Carriages Belle Epoque

Paris, France1900Pre-linenGood

Horse-drawn carriages, barrel-laden wagons, and fashionably dressed Parisians throng the broad sweep of the Rue Royale looking toward the Place de la Madeleine on a brilliant summer day — this extraordinary 1900 real-photo postcard, published by A. Taride, Paris, is a masterpiece of pre-automobile urban photography, the sheer density of horse traffic and pedestrian life making it an invaluable document of Paris at the very moment of the Exposition Universelle. The card was sent on 24 August 1900 — just as the great World's Fair was drawing its final crowds — with a handwritten message in German covering the right-hand margin, signed by someone sending warm greetings and dated 24/8/1900. The reverse, addressed formally to Mademoiselle Michaele Singer, care of Herr Heinrich Singer, St. Pölten, Autriche, bears a French 10-centime Sage-type stamp (Scott #103, République Française, Type II, 1892 issue, violet-black on lavender) cancelled at Paris with an Amsterdam transit and St. Pölten arrival marks. The Sage stamp in used condition with a clear Paris cancel is itself a collectible item. This card — image, postmark, philately, and social history — fires on every cylinder.
