Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two Austrian cards from the fateful spring of 1938 form an extraordinary pairing: a serene photographic view of the Prateridyll — the ancient wooded idyll of Vienna's Prater park, a lone equestrian dwarfed beneath a massive gnarled oak — alongside an "Offizielle Messepostkarte" (Official Trade Fair Postcard) from the Wiener Frühjahrsmesse (Vienna Spring Trade Fair), postmarked March 20, 1938 at the Rotundengelände fairgrounds. That date is historically electrifying: just nine days after the Anschluss of March 12, 1938, when Nazi Germany annexed Austria. The fair postcard bears three Austrian stamps — a 4g Carinthian, a 1g Burgenland regional costume, and the striking 5+2g dark green charity stamp — all cancelled with the fair's special Rotundengelände postmark. The sender, "Fritanella" (or similar), writes to "Herrn Eugen Jahn" in Graz simply: "Von unserem Messebesuch, Gruss" (From our trade fair visit, greetings) — an everyday message sent at one of history's most turbulent moments.
