Postcard 1945 Cape Cod Mass Linen Greetings Sailboat Helping Grandpa Barnstable

Cape Cod (Barnstable), Massachusetts, USA1945LinenGood

Postmarked Barnstable, Massachusetts on August 21 (year aligns with the Roosevelt 1¢ stamp issued 1945), this cheerful linen-era greeting card from Cape Cod pairs a luminous color illustration of a two-masted schooner under full sail with a tender vignette of a white-bearded grandfather teaching a young child to mend fishing nets — captioned "Helping Grandpa." A poem by Rev. H. F. Huse fills the lower left: "What lessons from the sea there come / From its immensity; / Its mystery, horizons far, / Breathe forth eternity…" On the back, a sender writes to Jack at 9 East 2nd St., New Castle, Delaware: "Hi Jack, how is your family doing? It is all gone. Hope you find me. [Signed] Richland Jane." The Franklin D. Roosevelt Hyde Park 1¢ memorial stamp — issued just months after FDR's death in April 1945 — makes this a historically resonant piece of mid-century Americana.
