Antique & Vintage Postcards

A cheeky Irish lad in a green jacket and battered hat shoulders a shillelagh and grins from the cover of this charming British-made novelty pull-out postcard captioned "A 'Small Irish' from Londonderry" — but when the flap is raised, a long accordion strip of County Donegal scenes tumbles out, published by Valentine & Sons Ltd. of Dundee and London. The interior views, each initialled "JV" for the Valentine imprint, include the wild coastal drama of Slieve League & Glen River, the romantic ruin-strewn shores of Lough Foyle at Moville, the grand towers of Glenveagh Castle amid its mountain setting, Killybegs from Carntulloch, Salmon Leap at Ballyshannon, and further Donegal landscapes — a miniature tour of one of Ireland's most scenically spectacular counties. The novelty was classified as a "Printed Paper Mailing Novelty" by the British G.P.O., passed for the printed paper rate, with instructions "To Open Raise Flap." The reverse is unused, with no. 417 pencilled at lower right and a dealer price of $8.00 noted in pencil at upper right. Valentine & Sons, founded in Dundee in 1825, became one of the world's largest postcard publishers; their Irish series are avidly collected both in Ireland and among the diaspora. The illustrated boy figure is a stock "comic Irish" type common in Edwardian souvenir publishing, reflecting the cultural shorthand of the era. The cover retains vivid color and the leporello strip is intact and complete.
