Antique & Vintage Postcards

Streetcars, early automobiles, horse-drawn wagons, and pedestrians crowd a sweeping bird's-eye view of Albany's State Street as it climbs toward the gleaming white New York State Capitol in this vibrant hand-colored "White Border" postcard — a snapshot of New York's capital city at a moment of transition, when the trolley and the Model T shared the same cobblestones. The imposing Romanesque post office building anchors the right foreground, while hotel signs and commercial blocks line the left. Mailed from Albany on July 11, 1922, the card was sent to a Catherine at 4220 E. 98th St., Cleveland, Ohio, by a writer who reports arriving "about ten o'clock last night" and finding that someone "had felt awful ditsy" but "didn't rest well." The 1-cent green Washington stamp (Scott #525 or similar) pays the domestic postcard rate. Published by Chas. W. Hughes of Mechanicville, N.Y., with the Star Quality / American Art imprint.
