Postcard 1921 Central Avenue St. Petersburg Florida Streetcar Scene Linen

St. Petersburg, Florida, USA1921Pre-linenFair-Good

A bustling Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, Florida crackles with the energy of the early 1920s Florida land-boom era: a green electric streetcar marked "St. Pete 1908" negotiates the crowded intersection alongside Model T Fords, a horse-drawn wagon, and a dense crowd of pedestrians in front of the city's landmark brick commercial buildings — one with distinctive Romanesque arched storefronts. This is "the Sunshine City" in its ascendancy, just before the explosive mid-decade boom that would transform it into a national tourist phenomenon. Edna wrote to Lana in Port Huron, Michigan with infectious enthusiasm: "Dear Lana — We reached here safe. It is a beautiful Sunshine City. I wish you could see the oranges and fruit. Sunday we had 88 but it was fine in the shade — we often speak about one needing the thin clothes but can't think about snow and ice. Would like to hear from you." Postmarked St. Petersburg, December 28, 1921.
