Postcard 1902 Vanished London Holywell Wych Street Strand Hildesheimer Art

London, England, UK1902Pre-linenGood

A warm gaslit evening frozen in chromolithographic ink: the busy corner of Holywell Street and Wych Street as seen from the Strand, packed with Edwardian pedestrians in top hats and long skirts beneath the ornate iron lamp, the façade of F.E. Davy's shop blazing with gilded signage and the "Rising Sun" pub sign glowing above — a corner that ceased to exist in 1902–3 when the London County Council swept it away to build Aldwych and Kingsway. Artist C. Payne rendered the scene with affectionate nostalgia, and the "Vanished London" series published by S. Hildesheimer & Co. (London & Manchester, printed in Bavaria, no. 5843) memorialised dozens of lost streetscapes for an Edwardian public mourning rapid urban change. Holywell Street had a notorious Victorian reputation as London's centre for second-hand books and, less politely, racy literature, making this corner doubly fascinating to social historians. The card is unused, colours bright, with penciled dealer price "30¢" and "$3.00" on the back.
