Turner's atmospheric masterpiece "Palace of Caligula" — crumbling Roman towers reflected in turbulent water, tiny scarlet-cloaked figures dwarfed by antiquity — a painting Turner bequeathed to the British nation and now in the National Gallery, London. Raphael Tuck & Sons issued this card in their prestigious "Gallery Pictures — Framed Gem Oilette" series (no. 9772), embossing the mahogany-toned surround in gold to simulate an actual picture frame; the back copy notes that Turner was born 1775 and died 1851 and praises his "great originality and imagination."
