Postcard 1902 J.M.W. Turner Palace of Caligula Tuck's Framed Gem Oilette 9772

London, England, UK1904Pre-linenExcellent

Set like a jewel in an embossed gilt frame of florid Victorian ornament, this richly printed oval vignette reproduces J.M.W. Turner's atmospheric masterpiece "Palace of Caligula" — crumbling Roman towers reflected in turbulent water, tiny scarlet-cloaked figures dwarfed by antiquity — a painting Turner bequeathed to the British nation and now in the National Gallery, London. Raphael Tuck & Sons issued this card in their prestigious "Gallery Pictures — Framed Gem Oilette" series (no. 9772), embossing the mahogany-toned surround in gold to simulate an actual picture frame; the back copy notes that Turner was born 1775 and died 1851 and praises his "great originality and imagination." The card is unused and the embossed gilt border retains excellent relief and lustre, a testament to Tuck's legendary printing quality. Tuck held a Royal Warrant — "Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King & Queen" — adding institutional prestige to an already collectible series.
