Postcard 1902 UDB London City of London School Horse Carriages Tuck

London, England, UK1902Pre-linenExcellent

Horse-drawn hansoms and a rumbling omnibus sweep past the ornate Victorian Gothic façade of the City of London School on the Victoria Embankment — the motion blur on the closest carriage a ghostly reminder of how long a real-photo exposure took in the Edwardian street. The school's richly carved stonework, arched loggia, and pepper-pot turrets crowd the frame with confident civic splendor, while a stovepipe-hatted figure strides the pavement and a second carriage stands motionless to the right, its coachman bolt upright. Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons in their prestigious "Town and City" Series 2001, phototyped in Holland and issued as art publishers to Their Majesties the King and Queen — a royal warrant dating this to the reign of Edward VII (1901–1910). The undivided back (no line separating address from message space) confirms a pre-1902 design, though the card likely circulated 1902–1904. City of London School cards from this Tuck series are genuinely scarce; the building shown was demolished and replaced in 1986, lending the image irreplaceable documentary weight.
