From a gilded perch high above Jean Lamour's legendary wrought-iron gates, a lone figure in a dark coat surveys the sweeping grandeur of Place Stanislas — Nancy's UNESCO-listed 18th-century royal square stretching toward the Gothic spires of the Basilique Saint-Épvre in this atmospheric real-photo postcard from the 1930s, vintage automobiles parked along the arcades hinting at a city poised between Belle Époque elegance and the gathering storms of the Second World War. Commissioned by Stanisław Leszczyński, the deposed King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, the square was completed in 1755 as one of Europe's finest examples of Baroque civic planning; photographer and publisher V. Roeder of Nancy captured it here in rich sepia-toned gelatin silver, the elaborate flaming torch finials of the ironwork gates framing the composition in the foreground with theatrical flair. The Edition d'art imprint on the reverse and the visible 1930s motor cars help date this finely produced card to approximately 1930–1938.
