Postcard c1905 Paris Sacré-Cœur Montmartre Le Funiculaire Under Construction

Paris, France1907Pre-linenGood

Two funicular cars glide along parallel tracks up the steep green slope of Montmartre as the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur looms above, its signature Romano-Byzantine domes still partly wrapped in construction scaffolding — a rare visual clue placing this image in the basilica's long building campaign, which stretched from 1875 to its consecration in 1919. The broad staircase at left, lamp-posts lining the avenue, and the lower funicular station building at right frame a scene that was itself a marvel of modern Paris infrastructure when the Montmartre funicular opened in 1900. The card has a light blue-green tint to the sky, printed in the early phototype style. The reverse is completely unused — no stamp, postmark, or writing — and bears the standard post-1904 divided-back French "Carte Postale" format with the note that foreign countries do not all accept correspondence on the front. The scaffolding on the right dome and left turrets helps date the photographic source to approximately 1905–1910, well before the 1914 completion of the main structure.
