Postcard c1903 Paris Gare du Quai d'Orsay Horse Carriages Train Station CPA

Paris, France1905Pre-linenGood

Horse-drawn cabs queue beneath the ornate Beaux-Arts façade of the Gare du Quai d'Orsay — today's legendary Musée d'Orsay — its massive arched windows and elaborate sculptural frieze gleaming in early-morning light, the great clock marking "Paris-Orléans" visible near the roofline. This tranquil street scene, captured when the station was still brand-new (it opened in 1900 for the Paris Exposition Universelle), shows the seamless blend of iron, stone, and glass that made architect Victor Laloux's design a marvel of its age. A liveried coachman holds his horse steady as well-dressed passengers alight, the scene entirely free of automobiles — a world on the cusp of transformation. The card is unused, its pale blue-tinted sky and fine halftone printing characteristic of the earliest post-1900 French CPA production. The reverse carries the standard undivided-back disclaimer about foreign correspondence, placing it firmly in the 1902–1904 window.
