Antique & Vintage Postcards

Shot from the railroad tracks at Railroad Wharf, this vivid hand-colored view captures the Pilgrim Monument piercing the Cape Cod sky just two years after its 1910 dedication — construction cranes still visible on the hill behind — while the working waterfront of Provincetown crowds the shoreline below, steeples, fish sheds, and dock pilings jostling for space. The card carries a remarkable postmark: it was cancelled aboard the USS Mississippi on August 8, 1910, a Navy ship's post office cancel that elevates this piece well above a typical Cape Cod souvenir. Published by The Provincetown Advocate (catalog no. 1647), the card was addressed to Elsie at 3837 Cambridge St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 1-cent Franklin stamp (green) affixed is consistent with the 1908–1910 issue. The Pilgrim Monument, at 252 feet the tallest all-granite structure in the United States, was dedicated by President Taft on August 5, 1910 — just three days before this card was postmarked, making it a near-contemporary document of that historic event.
