Postcard 1900 Ragusa Dubrovnik Croatia Before 1667 Earthquake Bernhard Weiss

Ragusa (Dubrovnik), Croatia (then Austria-Hungary)1900Pre-linenGood

A ghostly bird's-eye engraving of a walled Renaissance city packed tight against the Adriatic sea wall — this is Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik) as it looked before the catastrophic earthquake of 6 April 1667 that killed thousands and levelled most of its Gothic and Renaissance fabric. The caption, in German, reads Ragusa vor dem Erdbeben im Jahre 1667. Published in Ragusa by Bernhard Weiss (catalogue no. 61242) and printed in the multilingual Austro-Hungarian "Correspondenz-Karte / Dopisnica / Cartolina di corrispondenza" format on the reverse — three languages reflecting the polyglot Dalmatian coast — this undivided-back card dates to approximately 1898–1902, placing it firmly in the earliest wave of Dalmatian tourism postcards. The image itself reproduces a 17th-century bird's-eye prospect, likely derived from a copper engraving in the Ragusan civic archives, making it a postcard of a primary historical document: doubly precious to historians of the Adriatic.
