Postcard 1930s Linen Syracuse University Slocum Agriculture Hall NY Chrome

Syracuse, New York, USA1938LinenFair-Good

Ivy-draped brick and limestone rise four stories above a sun-dappled street where a steel-blue 1930s sedan and a yellow-green coupe glide past — this linen-era scene captures the Joseph Slocum College of Agriculture at Syracuse University at the height of its collegiate-Gothic grandeur, with the columned Hall of Languages peeking through the elms at right and a glimpse of Lyman Hall's cupola on the far left. Published by the venerable Wm. Jubb Co. of Syracuse, the card was mailed to a trio of women — addressed to "The Misses Seins, Cohen and Macdonald" at 1526 17th St. NW, Washington, D.C. — by a sender who signs off affectionately, wishing them well and sending love to their children, a warm domestic moment tucked inside this handsome campus view. The 1-cent green Franklin stamp anchors the upper right, neatly cancelled, placing this correspondence firmly in the linen postcard era of the mid-to-late 1930s.
