Postcard 1962 Chrome TWA Trans-World Flight Center Idlewild Airport Queens NY

Queens, New York, USA1962ChromeExcellent

Like a great white bird caught mid-flight in concrete and glass, Eero Saarinen's swooping masterpiece unfurls across this vivid early-1960s chrome postcard — the Trans-World Flight Center at Idlewild Airport photographed in brilliant Curteichcolor 3-D just after its triumphant opening on May 28, 1962, with a fleet of tail-finned Chevrolets and boxy early-sixties sedans filling the forecourt beneath that impossibly organic roofline. Saarinen, who died in 1961 before seeing his vision completed, designed the terminal as a "giant bird in motion," and this postcard — never mailed, stamp space blank — captures the building at its most pristine, before the airport was renamed John F. Kennedy International in 1963, making this an Idlewild-era image of extraordinary historical specificity. The reverse carries a detailed description noting the terminal's 30-acre site and its handling of approximately 6,000 passengers daily, a figure that today reads as charmingly modest against the 50 million JFK now serves.
