Real photo postcard of Lynmouth from high above — the village and its tiny stone harbour visible at the foot of the cliff, the steep hillside of Lynton above it crowded with Victorian hotels and villas, the Bristol Channel stretching to the horizon. Lynmouth, where the East and West Lyn rivers meet the sea, was a celebrated beauty spot from the Romantic era; Shelley lived here briefly in 1812, and the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth were linked by a water-powered cliff railway from 1890. This pre-flood view shows the original village layout: on the night of 15–16 August 1952, catastrophic floods destroyed much of what is visible here, killing 34 people and reshaping the valley. Cards like this are among the few records of the village as it stood before. Card no. 8810; published by the Photochrom Co. of Tunbridge Wells. Never mailed.
