Antique & Vintage Postcards

A bronze emperor frozen mid-command — this evocative pre-linen carte postale captures the equestrian Statue de Napoléon presiding over the grand Place du Général de Gaulle in Rouen, Normandy, circa 1902–1910. The imposing monument, cast by sculptor Louis Rochet and unveiled in 1865, shows Napoleon in Imperial regalia atop a rearing horse, mounted on an ornate stone plinth encircled by decorative iron chain bollards and a bed of flowers. Haussmann-era apartment facades fill the left background while a classical civic building anchors the right — likely the old Palais de Justice wing. The bromotype photographic printing process used by publisher C.V. gives the image exceptional tonal depth for its era. The reverse is a pristine undivided-back layout with the characteristic French bilingual notice warning that correspondence on the front was not accepted by all foreign countries — a telltale hallmark of the 1902–1904 transitional period. Never posted, never written, this card is a clean collector specimen from the golden age of French cartes postales.
